He was predeceased by: his parents, Floyd Garnett and Syble N. Reynolds Hurt; his son Joseph Howard Hurt; and his siblings, Mildred Lowe, Marie Friant, Jesse Hurt, Donel Hurt and Wayne Hurt.

He is survived by: his wife Virginia Cissell Hurt; his children, Cheryl Jackson, Lisa Logsdon (Randall) and David Hurt (Lori); and his grandchildren, Pamela Jackson Krebs (Matt), Angela Jackson Baker (Jonathan), Michele Logsdon Wise (Jake), Daniel Hurt (Kristina), Nathan Hurt (Vanessa) and Noah Hurt. He is also survived by 11 great grandchildren.
