He was predeceased by: his father Carel Wells; his wife Patricia Ann Dunlap Wells; and his son Elton Wells, Jr.. He is survived by: his children, Dr. Pamela Reed of Plainfield, IN, Sharon Longstreth of Indianapolis, IN, James Wells (Diana) and Derrick Wells (Jacqueline) of Newburgh, IN; his stepdaughters, Pamela Westby (Rick) of Eddyville, KY and Sheila Miller of Kuttawa; and his siblings, Linda Alexander (Tony) of Crofton, KY and Darrell Well of Utica, KY. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
