He was predeceased by: his father Julius Layne; his wife Fannie Smith Layne; his daughter Eileen Varney; his son-in-law Lester Varney; and his siblings, Burlin, Joseph, Emery, Perry, Vanis, Thomas Layne and Lillie Mae Layne.
He is survived by: his children, Madeline Coleman (Paul), Ronnie Layne (Melissa), Kathleen Pugh (Eddie) and Geraldine Preece (Clifton); and his sister-in-law Frances Layne. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild.
