He was predeceased by: his father William Wilburn; his former wife Helen; and his son Jerry Allen Wilburn. He is survived by: his wife Edith Ross Wilburn; his children, James "PeeWee" Wilburn (Margaret), Bill Wilburn, Bobby Wilburn, Marty Wilburn (Charllote) and Vonda Lee Vonlinger; his stepdaughter Diedre Johnson; his sister Opal Neikirk (Buford); and his grandchildren, Amy Cox, Nicholas Wilburn, Shanna High, Holly Lynn, Josh Wilburn, Tristen Wilburn, Luke Wilburn, Tori Wilburn, Megan Vonlinger, Zack Wilburn, Kayla Wilburn, Devin Wilburn, Abi Wilburn and Whitney Wilburn. He is also survived by 29 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
