He was predeceased by: his parents, Stewart Oaks and Treva Mae Rogers Oaks; his brothers, Yaundell Oaks and John Oaks; and his grandson Sherman Brent Oaks.
He is survived by: his wife Mary Juanita Jones Oaks; his brother Timothy Oaks (Loretta); and his children, Shelly Marshall (Tip), Hyman Oaks, Jr., Mark Oaks, Melvin Oaks (Kim) and Sherman Oaks (Sharri). He is also survived by ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
