He was predeceased by: his parents, John Tate and Elva Street Tate; his wife Marvadene Doolin Tate; his son William Dean Whitten; and his siblings, Johnny Tate, James Tate and Sissy Brooks.

He is survived by: his children, Bryan Tate (Laura) of Hessville, Indiana, Brian Dale Whitten (Pamela) of Owensboro, Ricky Wayne Whitten of Hammond, Indiana and Tracy McGuire (Tim) of Crown Point, Indiana; and his sister Nancy Jo Stewart (Jim) of Florida. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
