He was predeceased by: his wife Marjorie Goldstein; his parents, Mary Theresa and John Newkirk; and his brothers, Tommy, Donald and Stephen Newkirk.

He is survived by: his sons, James D. Newkirk and Gregory S. Newkirk; his grandchildren, Tyler James Newkirk and Justin Michael Newkirk; his siblings, Joseph, Michael, Louis Newkirk, Linda Robinson, Terry Watson, Janice Strothoff and Carol Stallard; and his niece Sandra Dennis.
