“JT Part 2 For me, choosing friends did not involve their passing filters of race, religion, education, geography or socio-economic status. My sole criterion for friendship was based on character and a simple question; is this fellow I have met a good man? In February, 1970, at Fort Richardson, Alaska, I got it right, and got a life-long friend in Leland Keeling, as good a man as one could ask for, and fun, too.”

John Tautin wrote a sympathy message

“JT Part 1. To enter the US Army in 1969 was to enter a boiling cauldron of humanity from across a turbulent America. I, like thousands of others entering the Army, found myself among strangers, young men from all walks of life and persuasions who had motivations ranging from patriotism and pragmatism to avoiding prison. In such situations one naturally seeks friends.”
