He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Chester and Mary Johnson Thaxton; his wife Rosie Marie Wright Thaxton; his son Herbert Chester Thaxton, Jr.; and his sisters, Lorene Harrell, Sara Price and Vera Lucille Cannon.
He is survived by: his daughters, Lesa Ellen Farmer (Neil) of Beverly and Susan Vernell Watts (Alan) of Pee Dee; his grandchildren, Justyn Stevenson (Meredith), Jessica Thompson and Jennie Watts; and his great grandchildren, Gracelynn Little, Joshua Little, Jr. and Faith Little.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his memory to a Pennyroyal Hospice at 220 Burley Avenue Hopkinsville, KY 42240.
