He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert Maess and Dora Maess; and his siblings, Helen Bach (William) and Albert "Bud" Maess. He is survived by: his wife Marilyn Murphy Maess; his sons, Fred Maess (Kristy) and Dave Maess; his grandchildren, Jennifer Greer (Eric), Michelle Oldham (Dave), Dillon McCarty (Julia), Jake Wambold and Mason Wambold; his great grandchildren, Cooper Greer and Zoey Greer; and his sister Sharon Krause (Joe).

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice, care of the St. Elizabeth Foundation, 1 Medical Village Drive, Edgewood, Kentucky, 41017.
