He was predeceased by: his parents, Gerstel Smith and Ora Kanatser Smith; and his daughter Carol Ann McFarland Smith. He is survived by: his spouse Chiyoko Hashikomi Smith; his children, Jim Smith (Anne Marie), Paula Glenn (Bill) and Kim Valdez; his stepchildren, David Bruce (Sanae), Dawn Bruce and Darlene Carey (Jeff); his siblings, Dorothy Ledbetter (Bill) and Danny (Linda); his grandchildren, Elizabeth Majors (Bill), Sarah Unger (Erric), Joey Valdez, Colbey Adair (Christian), Meggan Barnett, Kassy Kiskaden (Daniel), Kev Barnett, Mary Bruce, Lucas and Tabitha Carey; and his great grandchildren, Spencer, Oakley, Brantley Valdez, Jensen and Jasper Kiskaden.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Scott County Humane Society.
