He was predeceased by: his parents, Buford Smith and Betty Mae Jones Smith; and his siblings-in-law, Brenda Smith and Chris Murray. He is survived by: his wife Julia Fulcher Smith; his children, Kevin Lee Smith (Tammy) of Ardmore, AL, Scott Smith (Chanda) of Fulton, KY and Rebecca Reagor (Marty) of Newbern; his stepsons, Nicholas Howard of Paris, TN, Jonathan Howard of Fulton, KY and Julian Howard of Fulton, KY; and his siblings, Alvin Smith of South Fulton, TN, Ronald Gene Smith (Judy) of South Fulton, TN, Nancy Babbs of South Fulton, TN, Janie Sue Warren (Commodore) of Kenton, TN, Mary Murray of South Fulton, TN and Patsy (Wendell). He is also survived by nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren.
