He was predeceased by: his parents, William Sanders and Mary Fleming Sanders; and his sister Nancy Sanders. He is survived by: his wife Karen Meadows Sanders; his children, Tammy Newsom of Fleming County and Michael Sanders of Fleming County; his nephew Jeremy Bivens of North Carolina; and his niece Heather Drew of Alabama. He is also survived by his four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
