He was predeceased by: his parents, Glinna Simmons (Nichols) and Lewis Simmons; his siblings, Albert Simmons, Nellie Martin and Litha Lytle; his stepson Kevin Leigeber; his son-in-law Michael David Moore; his nephew Thom Simmons; and his niece Tamara Simmons-Carpenter.
He is survived by: his wife Marcella Simmons; his children, Donna Simmons-Bacon (Greg Hopkins), Sharon Simmons-Rigsby (Michael Rigsby), Lynda Simmons-Higgins (Ronald Higgins), Sheila Leigeber-Moore, Daniel Leigeber (Beth Leigeber), Christoper Leigeber and Matthew Leigeber; his siblings, Don Simmons, Ada Simmons-Ford (Paul Ford) and Lewis Simmons Jr. (Marcella Simmons); and his grandchildren, David Bacon (Katie Schneider), Andrea Bacon-Coulter (Ben Coulter), Carter, Rylie, Evan, Chase, Jack, Aiden Higgins, Eric Rigsby, Cole Rigsby, Erin Phillips, Jacob Leigeber, Courtney Moore-Sinclair (Daniel Sinclair), Caitlin Moore-Camazon (Michael Camazon), Zachary Moore (Ginger Moore), Mateo Leigeber, Marcel Leigeber and Michael Leigeber. He is also survived by great grandchildren.
On July 21st, 2024, Elwood defeated Parkinson's Disease in the arms of Jesus at the age of 84, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
