He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert Thornberry and Lillie Smiley Thornberry; his wife Gloria Kay Ford Thornberry; and his siblings, Albert R. Thornberry, Janice Embry, Mary Emma Whiteside and Edna M. Eatherly.

He is survived by: his children, James Thornberry (Lynn) of Falls and Stephanie Staples (Aaron) of Falls; and his grandchildren, Amber Thornberry, Justin Staples, Jarret Staples, Taylor Lindsey and Chloe Lindsey.
