He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert Mitchell and Ella Mitchell (Rennirt); his children, Nelvina "Blondie" Mitchell Durbin, Rickey Dale Mitchell and Thomas Nelson "Tommy" Mitchell; his brother Thomas E. Mitchell; his sons-in-law, Bob Stayton and John Durbin; his brothers-in-law, Charles T. Baker, Dean Snellen, John Brown, Dwight Richardson and Tim Risinger; his goddaughter Becky Lynn Dorton; his nephews, John Brown Jr., Chuck Baker and Ernest Richardson; and his great-niece Michaela Walls.

He is survived by: his wife Bertha "Sissie" Mitchell (Rayhill); his daughters, Valerie Denise Mitchell Stayton and Samantha Dawn Mitchell Brown (Carl); his siblings, John Henry Mitchell (Brenda), Jo Ann Snellen, Patsy Brown, Virgie Richardson, Brenda J. Risinger and Sherry "Kay" Wicker (Stevie); his sister-in-law Birtie Baker; his grandchildren, Casey Bowman (Jake), Cristie Ramsey (Kyle), Wendy Underwood (George), Edmund Doyle, Nick, Ben (Jennifer), Sarah and Hannah Durbin of Bardstown, KY.; and his daughter-in-law Bobbi Mitchell of Indiana.
