He was predeceased by: his parents, Farris Bates and Lettie Bates (Johnson); his daughter Clydena Collins; and his siblings, Hargis Bates, Carlos Bates, Harold Bates and Hazel Young.
He is survived by: his wife Elana Bates; his sons, Morris Bates of Winchester, Stevie Bates of Eubank, Raymond Bates II of Eubank and Jason Bates of Eubank; and his sisters, Mazie Holbrook of Whitesburg and Carolyn Gilreath of Williamsburg. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; and four great-granchildren.
