He was predeceased by: his former wives, Minnie Thompson DeSpain and Rosa Witten DeSpain; his wife Zella Ann Gent DeSpain; his son Arley Leo DeSpain; his parents, William Thomas and Nora Alice DeSpain; his siblings, Grady, Harold, Kenneth, Eugene DeSpain, Edna Quillen, Anna Lewis, Mildred Mather Wright, Margie Avalon, Thelma Dean Brown Owens, Alma Lucille Milburn and Carrie Lee Kidd; his stepdaughter Betty Roberts; and his stepfather Robert M. Perkins.
He is survived by: his children, Larry DeSpain of Hodgenville and Charlene Hines Baumgardner (Paul) of Hodgenville; his daughter-in-law Delores DeSpain of Hodgenville; and his sister Ella Rea Watters of California. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
