He was predeceased by: his siblings, James, Wallace (Buddy) and Jeanette Clore; and his parents, Wallace K. Grubbs and Mary Chambers Grubbs.
He is survived by: his wife Helen Wesley Grubbs; his sons, Kirtley and Robert; his grandchildren, Rollins, Natalie and Eleanor Grubbs; and his sister Elizabeth Poore.
He received master of education degree from Xavier University and was awarded four fellowships from the National Science Foundation to study Biology at Duke University and the University of Kentucky.
