He was predeceased by: his parents, Edmond Smith and Ora Mae Shepard Smith; his son Barry Smith; his grandson Allen Smith; and his siblings, Ernest "Red" Smith and Edna Hill Sams.
He is survived by: his wife Elsie "Dee" Sturgill; his children, Deshay Burgess (Mike) of Mt. Juliet, TN, Jody Lynn Gaines (late Allen) of Georgetown and Gary Allen Smith (Bonnie) of Georgetown; his sister Edith Trombley (late Charlie); and his grandchildren, Donald Smith, Robin Roberts (Tony), Michael Harrod, Austin Burgess, Nolan Burgess and Andrew Burgess. He is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren.
