He was predeceased by: his parents, Lonnie Elam and Ressie Patrick Elam; and his sister Pauline Dunn. He is survived by: his wife Margie Elam of Cannel City, KY; his children, Vernon Elam Jr. of West Liberty, KY, Jackie Lynn Elam (Sherry), Christopher Lee Elam (Brenda) and Kimberly Conley (Charles) of Salyersville, KY; and his siblings, Norman Elam (Francis) of West Liberty, KY and Helen Lykins of Salyersville, KY. He is also survived by 13 Grandchildren, 12 Great Grandchildren.
