He was predeceased by: his parents, Ruford Russell and Alice Thompson Russell; his daughter Maudie Alice Starnes; and his brothers, Ernest Russell, Harry Levi Russell and John Russell.
He is survived by: his wife Marsha Gilbert Russell of Campton, Kentucky; his daughter Julie Spears (Greg Marshall) of Campton, Kentucky; his grandchildren, Cody Spears, Hannah Starnes, Jimmy Lee Howard, Dustin Spears and Sarah Starnes; and his brother Kenneth Russell of Cleveland, Tennessee.. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren.
