He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Alton and Mary Adelia Whelan (Ritchie); the mother of his children Mary Rose Whelan; his wife Shirley Berry Whelan; his sons, Terry Leonard Whelan and Jeffrey David Whelan; and his siblings, Mary Lou Shireman, Marion, Frank and Randall Whelan.
He is survived by: his children, Mary Lynne Medley (Chris), Loretta Gail Whelan, Marla Kaye Wimpee (Tommy), Sherry Claycomb (Frank), Angie Searcy (Willie) and Todd Berry; his grandchildren, Chad Whelan, Jessica Oliver, Mindy Nevitt (Jeremy), Kristen Whelan, Caleb Whelan (Shelby), Nathan Wimpee and Matthew Wimpee; his great grandchildren, Aria, Asher Nevitt and Ava Brazle; and his siblings, Eugene Whelan, Rosetta Ditto and Anna Margaret McGehee. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
