He was predeceased by: his mother Pauline Cochran Cales; his grandparents, James and Dorothy Cochran; his father Ralph Cales; his grandsons, James Cole Cales and Caleb Mayfield; his uncle Clifford; his aunt Bea Cochran; and his friend Karen Snell.

He is survived by: his wife Jimalene Cales of Winfield; his children, Debi Clark of Winfield, Jill Mayfield (Aaron) of McPherson, Eric Cales (Andrea) of Winfield and Bethany Dafforn (Todd) of Wichita; his grandchildren, Matthew Wallace, Jaden Mayfield, Landon Clark, Avery Mayfield, Trey Dafforn, Joshua Dafforn and Emma Dafforn; and his siblings, Warren Cales (Dianne), R. LeRoy Cales, Jr. (Tracy), Suzy Atherton (Gale), Barbara Leffew (Clayton), Sharon Flower (Clif) and Glenda Shelton (Larry).
