She was predeceased by: her parents, John Henry and Charlotte Hastings Shumaker; her husband Kenneth Caroll Gates; her grandsons, Jonathan Gates Wright and Kolin Gates; and her sister Mary Bentley.

She is survived by: her children, Kevin Gates, Cynthia "Cindy" Johnson and Kendra K. Kennedy. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
