He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward John and Lois Hartsell Thompson; his wife Sharon Davies McNeil Thompson; his daughter Katharine A. Thompson; and his siblings, Janet L. Thompson Franklin and Walt H. Thompson.

He is survived by: his son William E. Thompson (Deborah); his grandchildren, Andrew J. Thompson (Elisa) and Linnea R. Mellies (Dalton); and his sister Nancy Wakely. He is also survived by two great grandchildren.
