He was predeceased by: his former wife Frances Rose Oestreich; his sons, Perry Van Winkle and Gary Van Winkle; his sister Eileen Bledsoe; his brother-in-law Milton Bledsoe; and his grandson Michael Van Winkle.
He is survived by: his family Northwest of Linn; his wife Maxine Van Winkle; his children, Wanda Leppla (Jim), Robert Van Winkle (Karen) and Rose Ballman (Don); his brother Wilbur; his grandmothers, Van Winkle, Grand Junction and Colo; his stepchildren, Rita Richardson (Don) and John Hill (Lori); his stepbrother Lester Messing (Vernita); his grandchildren, Jennie Stricklin (Tony), Karrie Van Winkle, Skyler Ballman, Jaydon Ballman and Ashlyn Ballman; his stepgrandchildren, David Hill and Courtney Furley (Adam); and his great grandchildren, Joshua Stricklin, Anna Stricklin and Alisa Stricklin.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established to the Washington United Methodist Church or Washington County Historical Society.
