He was predeceased by: his parents, Gladys Smies (Behrends) of Courtland Kansas and Lt. Commander John J Smies; his niece Paula Hilbert (Kraus); and his brother-in-law Vernon Kraus of Pretty Prairie, KS.. He is survived by: his wife Susan; his daughter Amber Nicholls (Steve); his grandsons, Alex and Jack; his great grandchild Sarah Bartlett; his sister Linda Kraus of Pretty Prairie; his nephew Rick Kraus; and his niece Karen Perry.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the charity of the donor's choice and those may be left with Campanella & Stewart Funeral Home, P. O. Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.
