He was predeceased by: his mother Ruth; his stepfather Robert Zimmerman; his father Donald Akard; and his brother Brian Zimmerman. He is survived by: his son Andrew Akard (Trisha); his stepson Matthew Jones (Terra); his granddaughter Taylor Akard; his siblings, Bobbie Golder (Charlie), Donna Lambrecht (Randy), Judy Edwards (Jim), Kaye Holthaus (Ken), Sandy Carter (Larry), Anthony Zimmerman (Rae), Jeff Zimmerman (Brenda) and Duane Zimmerman (Connie); and his stepmother Deloris Akard. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka-Shawnee County Public Library.
