He was predeceased by: his parents, Leonard J. Gay and Opal Gay (Lapo); and his former wife Jane Gay. He is survived by: his wife Emma Hook; his children, Kim D. Gay, Kyle D. Gay (Flo), Kurt D. Gay (Pam), Kristi D. Lewis (Kirk) and Keely D. Moore (James); and his stepsons, Jeffrey Morstorf (Bethany) and Todd Morstorf (Valerie). He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
