He was predeceased by: his parents, Jack Bates and Elva Ransom Bates; his daughter Kelly Marie Bates; his sister-in-law Regina Faidley; and his nephew Brian Strong.
He is survived by: his wife Rita; his siblings-in-law, Mark Boranyak (Sharon) and Terri Strong (Mark); and his nieces, Holly Busey (Matthew), Katie Faidley and Nikki Stiles (Chris). He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Washburn University Foundation, for the John Bates Memorial University Band Scholarship, sent in care of the funeral home.
