Gary Burkholder wrote a sympathy message

“Anyone who could accomplish half of what Dan did would be satisfied with their life. To raise five children, obtain a Doctor’s degree in history, become a college history Professor, play the fiddle, become a first class whittler, own a newspaper, be bilingual, a fan of Bluegrass, world traveler, raise Scottish Highlander cattle, and his own hogs. Dan once told me that the best way to learn History was to get a job teaching it. He will be missed but thank God he lived. Gary and Carol Burkholder”
