He was predeceased by : his parents, Rev. Henry Apel and Elva Van Meter Apel; his wife Kathryn E. Burkepile; his brother Myron; and his siblings-in-law, Marilyn Apel (Svensson), Evelyn (Burkepile) and Jewell Walden.

He is survived by : his children, Debra McKee, Shari Tedford (Randy) and Alan Apel (Marie); and his grandchildren, Heather (Jason Perkins), James (Britta), Christopher McKee (Crystal), Andrew Tedford (Kate), Sarah Buchanan (Bryce), Aaron (Melanie), Michael Apel (Elizabeth) and Elisabeth Sullivan (Jason). He is also survived by 22 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church for Missions, Special Olympics, or TARC, and sent in care of the funeral home.
