He was predeceased by: his parents, Lawrence Hammes and Cora Hammes (Cornelia Stallbaumer); his wife Cleta Mae Lierz; and his siblings, Donald, Dorothy Bergman Schraad and Cleta Mae Haverkamp.
He is survived by: his children, LuAnn Roth (Bill) of Paxico, Marlene Wessel (Bob) of Seneca, Joan Glissman (Ron) of Centralia, Ellen Laird (Mark) of Topeka, Bob Hammes (Mary) of Hoyt, Mike Hammes of Topeka and Tricia Hammes of Shawnee; and his siblings, Alvin of Seneca, Galen of Seneca, Leo of Seneca, Kenneth of Seneca, Larry of Topeka, Bernice Heiman of Baileyville, Mary Rose Feuerborn of Richmond and Jeanette Becker of Seneca. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 6 step great-grandchildren, and 2 step great-great grandchildren.
He spent many of Cleta's later years caring for her as she suffered with Parkinson's disease.
