He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert N. Schmidt and Margaret Schmidt (Jeffers); his wives, Vera Pauline King and Helen Farrar; his siblings, Donald Schmidt, Dwyane Schmidt and Marjorie Trickey; and his granddaughter Cassandra Downey.
He is survived by: his sons, Danny Schmidt of Dodge City and Ronnie Schmidt (Barbara) of Copeland; his granddaughters, Stephanie Schmidt, Andrea Downey (Eric) of Riverview, Florida, Sarah Atzbach (Aaron) of Dodge City, Kansas and Katie Schmidt of Copeland, Kansas; and his sister Glenda Koehn of Weskan. He is also survived by many other friends and relatives.
A memorial has been established for the Copeland Christian Church.
