He was predeceased by : his parents, Herman Smith and Gertrude Verdean Smith (Callahan); his siblings, Dan Smith and Shirley Smith; his sister-in-law Tonya Smith; and his nieces, Melissa and Mindy Smith.

He is survived by : his daughter Cary Wagner (Chris) of Lee's Summit; his grandson Carter James Wagner of Lee's Summit; and his siblings, Bob Smith of Tulsa, Bill Smith of Cherryvale, Mike Smith of Cherryvale, Gary Smith of Cherryvale, Pat Smith of Galesburg and Linda Essig of Parsons, Kansas..

Memorials are suggested to the Proud Animal Lovers Shelter (PALS) in keeping with Jim's love of strays and his hope for a forever home for each of the fur friends.
