He was predeceased by: his parents, Elmer Sr. Nelson and Alice Nelson (Cravens); his sons, Jerry Ray Nelson and Thomas Lee Nelson; and his siblings, Elmer Nelson, Jr. and Geneva Munson.

He is survived by: his former wife Mildred Joan Peterson; his wife Milly Nelson; his son Alan Nelson (Kimberly) of Riley; his grandchildren, Mike Nelson (Becky) of Leonardville, Jordy Nelson (Emily) of Leonardville and Kelsey Nelson of Leonardville; and his great grandchildren, Izabel, Teske, Koy, Rhett, Royal, Brooks and Adda.

A memorial has been established for the Walsburg Lutheran Church.
