He was predeceased by: his parents, Burley Johnson and Estella "Billie" Rice; his stepfather Charley Rice; and his brother-in-law Bud Simmons. He is survived by: his wife Charlotte; his daughters, Michelle Smith (Greg) of Hutchinson and Kristina "Kris" Young; his grandchildren, Tanner Young of Wichita and Payton Young of Wichita; his siblings, Carolyn Jantz (Roger) of Hesston, Lauretta French, Pam O'Neal, Wendy Smith (Troy) of Wichita, Charles "Doug" Rice of Hutchinson and Roy Johnson (Mildred) of Chester, OK; and his siblings-in-law, Melvin Simmons of Wichita and Sharon Simmons of Pratt.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kansas National Guard Museum or Buhler City Park Fund, in care of Buhler Mortuary.
