He was predeceased by: his parents, Edwin J. Merklein and Freida Merklein (Hoffman); his siblings, Edwin G. Merklein, Norman Merklein and Ruth Ann Miller; and his brother-in-law Virgil Miller.
He is survived by: his wife Phyllis A. Stutterheim; his children, Susan Warner (Charlie) of Cimarron, KS, Beth Merklein of Oregon, MO, Matt Merklein (Kelly) of Dallas, TX, Denise Kaufmann (Robb) of Southlake, TX and Janna Newman (Ryan) of Gold Canyon, AZ; his grandchildren, Hailey (Jake), Emily, Jack, Wyatt, Sam, Zachary, Ian, Cade, Britt, Cort, Tyler, Brynn, Irelyn and Macen; his great grandchild James; and his siblings-in-law, Carla Merklein of Alma and Keith Stutterheim (Marie) of Weston, MO. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church or the Phillips County Hospital.
