He was predeceased by: his father Carl Herbert Carlson; and his brother Richard Sand. He is survived by: his wife Mary Ann Sand (Schuetzler); his children, Michael Sand (Genevieve), James Sand (Ann Wettergren) and Jennifer DeVine (Bob); his siblings, Vernon Sand (Arlene), Jayne Stanley (Gary) and Barb Hanson (Jim Wilson); and his grandchildren, Benjamin Sand, Zachary DeVine, Abigail Sand, Emma Sand and Mackenzie DeVine. He is also survived by his family, friends.
