He was predeceased by: his parents, Kevin James Whelan and Mary Margaret (Voglewede); his wife Maxine Rose (Waldorf); and his siblings-in-law, Pat Whelan and Phil Newell.

He is survived by: his son Kevin Joseph Whelan; and his siblings, Jim Whelan, Pat Kalich (Dick), Peg Millard (Jim), Nancy Heyns (Terry) and Kathy Newell.
