He was predeceased by: his parents, Jacob Nachtigal and Edna Nachtigal (Klassen); his brothers-in-law, Darold Wedel and Richard Schmidt; and his nephews, Brian Goering, Todd Goering and Alan Schmidt.

He is survived by: his wife Helen Goering; his children, Bradley Gene Nachtigal (Jodi), Eric Neil Nachtigal, Madeline and Macy of Lawrence; his close friend John of Wichita; his siblings, Geneva of Moundridge, Dorothy Wiens of Carmel and Chester of Seattle; and his siblings-in-law, Josephine Schmidt, Jim Goering (Shirley), Homer Goering (Mary) and Vernon Goering (Jane) of North Newton, Kansas..

Following college graduation Frank served his country by registering with the draft as conscientious objector and was assigned as a therapy aide at Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas.
