He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert E. Abernathy and Fay Abernathy (McKinney); and his siblings, Evelyn Damker, William and Richard Abernathy.

He is survived by: his daughter Kelly Levinson; his grandsons, Robert Lee Kimbel and Gabriel Levinson; and his great grandchild Robert Allen Kimbel.
