He was predeceased by: his parents, Jesus Mares Avila and Julia Rivera of Mares; his wife Elsie Leal; his daughter Rosella Aguilar; and his sisters, Carolina Mares of Rivera and Teresa Mares of Enriquez.
He is survived by: his children, Jesus Omar Mares (Guadalupe Avila), Octavio Mares (Laura Aldevete), Aurelio Ariel Mares (Ginger Mares), Eduardo Mares (Sandra Vega), Luis Javier Mares (Alma Juardo), Anthony Lovato, Julie Allen (Chris), Janine Lovato, Elaine Salas (Tommy) and Patty Chappell (Carl); and his siblings, Jesus Mares Rivera (Isabel Prieto) of Mares, Berta Alicia Mares and Marta Mares of Moncada. He is also survived by 40 grandchildren, and, 50 great-grandchildren.
