He was predeceased by: his parents, Harley B. Appel and Nancy Brinkman Appel. He is survived by: his son Shane S. Appel (Dana); his wife Rogene; his grandmother Helene Glynn; his siblings, Terri Fuller (Tim), Sherri Baugh (Rickie), Kelli Strichternath (Eric), Jodi O'Neil (Kevin), Jill Murphy (Kevin) and Charles Kent Appel; his grandchildren, Aubree Appel (Brandon), Zahara Reason (Matt), Zach Harper (Tera), Zane Harper, Zeth Harper and Jason Owens; and his great grandchild Einar Harper.
