He was predeceased by: his sons, John Mendez and Ray Mendez; and his siblings, Joaquin Mendez, Augustina Joslin and Mary Baker.
He is survived by: his former wife Carol Joan Welsh; and his children, Mike Mendez (Janet) of Basehor, KS, Randy Mendez of Hiawatha, Tyrone Mendez and Cynthia Lehew (Greg). He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
