He was predeceased by: his parents, Julius J. "Lefty" Engel and Virginia "Chink" Engel (Younger); and his sister Phyllis Fike. He is survived by: his sons, Scott Engel (Geri) of Hays and Bobby Engel (Alicia Smith) of Hays; his siblings, Francis "Butch" Engel (Linda) of Hays and Anita Kreutzer of Denver, CO; his grandson Tyler Engel; and his stepgrandchildren, Logan and Madison Key. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
