He was predeceased by: his parents, Adolph Schmidt and Anna Schmidt (Staab); his daughters, Katie and Rachelle Schmidt; his siblings, Elmer, Celestine, Herbert (Frances), Alfred (Esther), Emery (Shirley), Cyrilla Evans (Maynard), Irene Dinkel (Ray) and Cora Dortland (Everett); his parents-in-law, Henry and Regina Leiker (Kreutzer); and his siblings-in-law, JoAnn Leiker (Ruder), Janet Leiker (Joy) and Daniel H. Leiker.
He is survived by: his wife DeAnn Leiker of Hays; his children, Andy (Marie Schmidt) of Olathe, KS and Joylene (John Kindel) of Shawnee, KS; his grandchildren, Daniel (Kelsey Kindel), Meghan (Luke Smrt), Sam Schmidt of Kansas City, MO, Zoe (Cole Hutchins) and Sophie Schmidt of Lawrence, KS; his great grandchildren, Henry Fitz and William Finn Kindel of Maryville, TN; his brother Gerald (Elaine Schmidt) of Hays; his sister-in-law Rosie Schmidt of Hays; and his in-laws, John Leiker of Lake Worth, FL, Alan Leiker of Hays, Ella Mueggenberg of Omaha, NE, Mark (Dora Leiker) of Munjor and Jane Leiker of Cedar Rapids, IA..
Visitation was held on Sunday, February 16th 2025 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Monday, February 17th 2025 from 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home (1906 Pine St, Hays, KS 67601). A rosary was held on Sunday, February 16th 2025 at 5:30 PM and at 6:30 PM at the same location. A Mass of Christian burial was held on Monday, February 17th 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church (1805 Vine St, Hays, KS 67601).
Memorials are suggested to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church for the Unify, Beautify, Glorify Campaign or to the St. Thomas More Society at TMP-M High School.
