He was predeceased by: his parents, Peter M. Sander and Julia Sander (Mermis); his daughter Terri Kowalsky; and his son-in-law Mark Helm. He is survived by: his wife Agnes I. Sander; his children, Richard Sander of Arlington, John Sander, Mike Sanders, Sheila Helm of Great Bend and Julia Novak; his grandchildren, Jannea Wright, Kevin Kowalsky, Michael Sander, Kyle Kowalsky, Rachel Shorter, Trevor Sander, Sara Potter, Takowa Sander, Cyandra Mong, Katia Novak and Zoe Novak; and his sisters, Lillian Dreiling of Hays, Alice Rohr and Rosemary McMahon. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren.
