He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Carl Payne and Myrth Payne (Zirker); his wife Marie Shaffer; his daughters, Tammy Rogers (Ronnie), Patty Hickman (Kirk) and Lisa Davis (John); his stepchildren, Dale Morgan (Tammy), Heather Fox (Barry) and Tim Morgan (Allison); his grandchildren, Ryan, Chris, Curtis, Megan and Matt; his stepgrandchildren, Ashley, Tyler, Dylan and Cody; and his children, Carl (Myrth Payne) and Second (Carol Payne).
After retirement he started driving a school bus for various local school districts until March of 2020 due to Covid.
